What is Vedic Mathematics?
Vedic Mathematics is a system of arithmetic and algebraic techniques reconstructed in the early 20th century by Swāmī Bhāratī Kṛṣṇa Tīrtha (1884–1960), who attributed the methods to insights drawn from the appendix of the Atharva-veda. Whether one accepts the historical claim or treats the work as an extraordinary modern synthesis, the techniques themselves are remarkable: short, elegant, and astonishingly fast.
At their core lie just 16 Sūtras (aphorisms) and 13 sub-Sūtras. Each is a tiny rule — sometimes only a few words — that unlocks a wide class of problems: multiplication, division, squaring, cubing, simultaneous equations, divisibility, factorisation, and more.
The Sūtras work with the patterns numbers naturally have, rather than against them. The result is a way of computing that often feels less like calculation and more like reading.
Why now?
In an age of calculators and AI, the value of mental arithmetic isn't speed for its own sake — it is understanding number structure. The same patterns that make a Sūtra fast also illuminate ideas in algorithms, modular arithmetic, signal processing, and machine learning. (We'll add a full "modern applications" section soon.)
